Gold medal award for Acnestar®
at the British Invention Show 2004
Over 100 exhibitors including inventors, manufacturers, investors and buyers attended the show at the
prestigious Alexandra Palace in London on Saturday 23 October, where over 200 inventions were shown.
All inventions exhibited at the show were eligible to be judged by a panel of leading experts in the
field of industry and invention - Dermastar Ltd was awarded a Gold medal in the Invention of the Year
Consumer category.
The Acnestar product, which took 3 years to develop, was represented at the show by the Welsh
Development Agency (WDA), a sponsored body of the Welsh Assembly Government. They are an Economic
Development Agency for Wales, helping businesses to develop and have supported Dermastar with funding
on this project.
The Gold medal award was collected on Dermastarâs behalf by Anne Swift, Project
Co-ordinator with the WDA.
Acnestar was developed by Dermastarâs Medical Director, Professor H Judodihardjo, one of the
UKâs leading dermatologists.
This innovative device uses light to treat the acne and brings a specialist therapy into the home.
The device shines blue light onto the affected area of skin at a wavelength which kills the bacteria
that cause acne.
"Many of my patients have busy lives and were finding visits to the clinic difficult to fit in,"
said Professor Judodihardjo.
"I thought about how useful the mobile phone is and wondered whether the technology might be
available to provide treatment for moderate acne conditions in a product of a similar size and
one that could fit into a bag, or a pocket. Research has revealed that significant improvements
to acne can be seen within three weeks."
