Professorâs portable acne light treatment is a star
A HAND-HELD device to treat acne has been developed by the medical director of a Cardiff clinic.
The AcneStar is a portable device which enables acne patients to safely treat their skin breakouts whilst
at home.
Blue light treatment is widely available in dermatology clinics but has been adapted for use in the
pocket-sized AcneStar by Professor Harryono Judodihardjo, a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and
medical director of Cardiffâs Cellite Clinic.
"Many of my patients have busy lives and were finding visits to the clinic difficult to fit in," said the
Professor.
"I thought about how useful the mobile phone is and wondered whether the technology might be available to
provide treatment for moderate acne conditions in a product of a similar size and one that could fit into a
bag, or a pocket.
"Research carried out to date reveals significant improvements to acne within three weeks."
The product, which took three years to develop, recently won support from the Welsh Development Agency,
which assisted Professor Judodihardjo in travelling to Geneva where AcneStar won the Silver Medal at the
Salon Internationale des Inventions.
The AcneStar will retail for £199.50 in selected skin clinics and independent pharmacies throughout the UK.
