7 Tips for Preventing Cold Weather Acne

Acne is a chronic skin condition that can remain troublesome all year around. However, the problem could aggravate considerably, especially during the winter season.

Dermatologists explain that winters are accompanied by dry skin that eventually increases sebum production. Sebum is an oily and waxy substance produced by the body’s sebaceous glands. Since our skin gets drier during colder months, our body tends to secrete an excess amount of sebum that can make the cells stick to each other. This can result in clogging of skin pores and acne breakouts.

Luckily, winter acne is both treatable and preventable. For instance, using over-the-counter products like clear gels for acne, anti-acne soaps, and acne facewash can help you in getting a flawless and spotless skin. However, since prevention is better than cure, you should consider adhering to the following tips in order to keep your skin healthy and acne breakouts at bay.

Here are some important tips that can help in preventing cold weather acne:

1. Don’t touch your face

First and foremost, stop touching your face with your bare hands every now and then. We tend to touch various surfaces and objects throughout the day and may pick up harmful bacteria from them. Touching the face frequently increases the risk of bacteria transfer on the skin and this may contribute to acne breakouts.

2. Clean your skin regularly

The air during winters is filled with irritants like dust and dirt particles. These particles can clog your pores easily, which in turn can result in acne breakouts. Thus, you should clean your face regularly with water.

3. Keep your skin moisturized

Dry skin is highly vulnerable to acne breakouts, and cold weather aggravates skin dryness. Cold air can suck the moisture out of your skin, leaving the outer layer of your skin dry and prone to cracks. Thus, make sure that you keep your skin moisturized at all times. For instance, consider using nourishing lotions or cold creams during the winter months.

4. Nourish your skin

Nourishing your skin is important, irrespective of weather conditions. You can make face masks using natural ingredients like fresh fruits, honey, etc. for keeping your skin nourished and hydrated.

5. Don’t overuse cleansers

Cleaning your face regularly doesn’t mean using cleansers multiple times throughout the day. Excess skin scrubbing can leave your skin dry and prone to acne breakouts. Ideally, you should use cleansers like face scrubs only once a week.

6. Get fresh air

Getting fresh air in your room is important for your skin health. You need to get the trapped dry air out of your room and get fresh air inside. Thus, make sure that your room is ventilated and windows and doors are left open a couple of times during the day. You should also consider going for a walk in the bright sun for 10-20 minutes daily.

7. Exercise regularly

Exercising pumps more oxygen in the body that eventually helps in keeping the skin healthy and glowing. Moreover, it will also help in keeping you warm and active.

In case you tend to experience acne breakouts during winters, don’t worry. It is still a minor ailment that can be treated easily with natural remedies for pimples and the best acne products like anti-acne gels. If your condition still doesn’t improve, visit a dermatologist at the earliest.
