The Science Behind Stress and Acne

Stress plays an important role in many adult acne breakouts and it must be treated properly and seriously. It is not only about stress, it is much more than that; it is about Acne.

According to the studies, directly or indirectly, stress is related to acne. Some of the reasons for a stress-related acne breakout can be depression and anxiety.

When you are stressed you become tense, which causes the adrenal gland to work, flooding your bloodstream with the cortisol hormone. Sweat glands then produce more oil, which in-turn blocks pores and trap bacteria inside, resulting in acne breakout.

Treating stress is not the same for everyone as the issues related to stress are never same. We all have our own way of dealing with our problems. Here are some methods you might like to consider for treating stress related acne:

  4. Don’t allow yourself to become constipated: constipation is a major factor encouraging stress-related acne. Constipation cause accumulation of toxins in the body which in turn block the pores. To prevent constipation, add more fibers and water to your diet.
  5. Avoid grease, oil and the sun - too much oil, grease or sun can block pores and trigger acne.
  6. Investing in some over the counter medications such as AcneStar soap and gel. You may find this to be more economical than prescription treatments for acne.
  7. Try to avoid stressful situations which can cause depression, low self-esteem, irritation, and anxiety. Seek help from your loved ones who can provide support and advice.
