Know the Right Way to Use an Acne Gel for Faster Results

When you purchase an acne gel, you are not being told the entire story. The packaging says that "Apply to affected area," and it's up to you to know how to do the rest. Morning or night? How much? Should you use too much or too little moisturizer? Here's how to get it right!

When is the Best Time to Use It?

Acne gels, especially those containing benzoyl peroxide, clindamycin, or adapalene combinations, are not strictly time-specific. If you already have acne, you are likely already using a retinoid or a stronger exfoliant at night to help prevent acne. Your skin is clean and rested in the morning, which is when your acne gel may work best for many people. The only exception is if a swollen spot develops during the day, then treat it that night.

Remember to separate this from your retinoid. Using both at the same time on the same skin area may increase irritation if used together without proper adjustment.

Which Ingredients You should look for?

Benzoyl peroxide-containing products (2.5%–5%) are the most clinically supported for targeted acne treatment. It works quickly to eliminate acne-causing bacteria and has been proven over decades. Don't like the smell of benzoyl peroxide? 1-2% salicylic acid is effective for blackheads and congestion. Niacinamide or azelaic acid are good choices for sensitive skin.

Avoid using retinoids as spot treatments. They work in a preventive manner across the skin rather than as a reactive solution for individual spots. Glycolic acid is less effective for oily pores. Vitamin C is best used after acne has resolved, when you're fading the acne marks it left behind. AcneStar Gel is a combination product containing clindamycin and nicotinamide to treat acne by targeting bacteria and excess oil. Results may vary by individual; consult the product's clinical documentation or a dermatologist for evidence on efficacy timelines.

How Should You Apply It?

One layer. This is all you need! The more product, the longer it will take to show results. It translates to dryness, peeling, and a compromised skin barrier. Less than doesn't feel intuitive. If there's only one spot, gently clean any excess flesh around it with a cotton swab. If the skin around the pimple appears healthy, it does not require treatment.

Unless using a full-face preventive treatment, apply the gel only on affected areas rather than spot treating each pimple individually. If your skin feels dry, apply a light moisturizer before any other product. Once the gel has fully absorbed, follow with moisturizer, then SPF, and finally makeup if needed.

For how Long should You use it?

Continue use until the spot is clinically resolved. Once that's done, switch to a gentler product, such as niacinamide or azelaic acid, to address any remaining redness and prevent the next breakout.

The duration of zone treatment may range from 2 to 6 weeks. Creating the right skin care regimen. The right skin care regimen for acne-prone skin doesn't have to be lengthy. Just consistent.

  • Morning – Apply acne gel followed by a moisturizer.
  • Night – Cleanse your skin, apply more powerful active ingredients, and finish with a moisturizer.

The four to six weeks of treatment, when done well, beat the ten-step treatment carelessly administered each time. The key to acne treatments is not using more product, but using the right products properly.
